Colic

We have witnessed firsthand the helplessness and heartache of new parents having a baby with colic. These poor little babies have a sore tummy and can’t get comfortable. Even sleeping is an issue. We wish they could tell us how we could help but instead they just cry. And cry.

The most widely accepted definition of colic today is “unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours.” No matter the definition, it is very trying on a parent.

Is it indigestion?

If a baby is inconsolable and unable to communicate, it’s hard to zero in on the problem being a digestive issue. Often times, when babies with colic are examined, we find misalignments in the upper cervical spine. These babies may be suffering from headaches and neck pain. If there is a traumatic or difficult birth associated with this situation, it is not unlikely.

A 1999 research paper looked at a small group of 50 infants who were suffering from colic. Half of the group received a drug to aid with digestion and half of the group visited a chiropractor for specific chiropractic adjustments.   At the conclusion of the two weeks, the chiropractic group saw a 30% more reduction in crying time!

Chiropractic isn’t a treatment for colic. If examination shows subluxation affecting the function of any part of the body, a chiropractic adjustment may restore proper function to that part of the body. Chiropractic allows our bodies to heal the way we are supposed to.
