ADHD

We do not treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Chiropractic care works on reducing nervous system interference and ADHD has been classified as a neurological disorder.  Parents who are looking for a natural, non-drug alternative to their children’s ADHD have found chiropractic care helpful.

“My son has been a patient of Dr. Ali Miller for almost three years now.   He began seeing Dr. Ali one year after being diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive Subtype.   In grade 4 my son was required to take medication during the school week in order to stay focused in class.  As a side effect, the medication suppressed his appetite causing him to lose a significant amount of weight.  After being informed that chiropractic care helps children with ADHD function without medication, I began sending my son to Dr. Ali.  After a year of weekly visits with her, my son felt he was capable of focusing on his own.   He asked his doctor if he could stop taking the medication.  His doctor suggested that he tried 2 school days off of the medication a week for the remainder of the school year.   Soon after trying this, my son’s teacher informed me that he was able to focus even on the days he was med-free.  As of this year (grade 7), my son is completely off ADHD medication and is doing extremely well at school.  He is able to complete his tests in the time given, which he was unable to do when he was first diagnosed.  His grades have improved significantly and according to his teacher he is able to pay attention in class.  My son came off the medication sooner than we expected and for this we thank Dr. Ali who has not only adjusted his back weekly, but has also shown concern and offered her support while he struggled with his diagnosis.”

What are the signs/symptoms of ADHD?

The classic signs that parents and teachers notice:

  • Easily distracted with hyperactivity.
  • Difficulty concentrating and sitting still
  • Inability to control impulsive thoughts and behaviours
  • Always moving—fingers, hands, arms, feet or legs

Where To Begin

The quality of our nutrition, environment and stress has decreased over the last few decades.  When tackling any disorder, we always want to look at any environmental factors that may be aggravating the situation.  We want to eliminate these first if possible.

  • Remove unnatural food dyes, preservatives and additives from the diet.
  • Try and purchase natural, organic foods grown without pesticides or herbicides.  There are dirty dozen lists of the worst fruits and vegetables. If you cannot switch your completely grocery produce list to organic, start with these.
  • Determine if there are any allergies or intolerances to dairy or gluten and eliminate these.
  • Decrease all sugars and artificial sweeteners.
  • Look at all of your household cleaners, soaps, laundry detergents and minimize harsh chemicals.

Some of these are wise choices whether your child has the symptoms associated with ADHD or not!

Traditional Treatment

A popular approach to controlling symptoms of ADHD is to administer medication in the form of methylphenidate (more commonly known as Ritalin). Ritalin has become so common that we forget that it is a schedule II controlled substance.  This means that it produces similar effects as amphetamines and cocaine.  The side effects can cause personality changes and permanent changes to the brain.  For this reason, parents look to alternative solutions.

Chiropractic: Pure and Natural

Chiropractic always looks to the nervous system. Instead of managing symptoms, we want to know if there are any disturbances to the child’s nervous system.

There is a direct link between spinal distortions in the neck and nervous system function. A thorough examination can find these misalignments in the neck and the stress on the nervous system.  Regular safe and natural chiropractic adjustments to help reduce this nervous system tension can greatly benefit children struggling with hyperactivity.
